Types of Watercraft We Insure

Whether you’re cruising, fishing, or enjoying high-speed watersports, our policies provide essential protection for a wide variety of vessels:

Watercraft and Boats We Insure

Physical Damage:

Whether you hit a submerged object or deal with storm damage, your policy covers the cost to repair your boat. Deductible options vary depending on your unit’s value:

Coverage Type What’s Covered
Collision Covers “crashes” with other boats, docks, rocks, or underwater debris.
Comprehensive Protection against fire, theft, vandalism, hail, and windstorms.

Most watercraft policies feature a standard deductible (often $500 or $1,000), but this can be adjusted to fit your budget.

Agreed Value Protection:

Most new boats can qualify for Agreed Value/Replacement Coverage. This means if your watercraft is a total loss, the insurance company pays the exact amount shown on your policy without subtracting for age or wear and tear. For older units, coverage shifts to Actual Cash Value (ACV), which accounts for the unit’s market value at the time of loss.

Pro Tip: Keeping your “Agreed Value” up to date is vital as marine market prices change!

Rodent Damage Protection:

In Saskatchewan, mice and other rodents can cause significant damage to upholstery and wiring during the off-season. While standard marine policies exclude “insects” and “marine life” (like zebra mussels), our Aviva NauticLife policies are designed to provide essential protection against rodent damage.

Coverage Breakdown:
Covered: Damage caused by rodents.
Excluded: Damage from insects or marine life (e.g., mussels/barnacles).

*Disclaimer: Specific rodent coverage is an enhancement exclusive to Aviva Canada NauticLife policies. Please consult your policy wording for the full list of excluded perils.

Personal Liability

Accidents on the water can be costly. Marine Personal Liability protects you if you are legally responsible for hurting someone else or damaging their property (like their boat or dock) while operating your vessel. We offer limits up to $5,000,000 to protect you against major lawsuits for injuries or property damage.

TRAILERS

Coverage for Utility and Transport Trailers

Do you have a trailer or camper to go along with your boat? It is important to remember that watercraft and trailers require separate insurance policies to be fully protected.

Whether it’s a boat trailer, a 5th wheel, or a holiday camper, we can help you set up an extension policy that can lower your deductible for a claim and add storage protection.

Watercraft Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to cancel my boat insurance in the winter?

You don’t need to cancel your policy. In Saskatchewan, marine policies include a “lay-up” period, usually from November 30 to April 1. During this time, your boat is covered while it is stored on land. This ensures you are still protected against theft, fire, or rodent damage while the boat is out of the water.

What is the difference between Agreed Value and Actual Cash Value?

Agreed Value means if your boat is a total loss, you get the exact amount listed on your policy without any depreciation (the drop in value as things get older). Actual Cash Value pays out what the boat was worth on the day of the accident, which accounts for its age and wear and tear.

Is my boat trailer covered under my boat insurance policy?

In Saskatchewan, boat trailers and the boats themselves are treated as separate policies. Your marine policy covers the vessel and its motor, while the trailer requires its own registration and extension policy to be protected against damage or theft.

Does my insurance cover my fishing gear and life jackets?

Yes, most of our policies include coverage for “Personal Effects.” For example, Aviva Canada’s NauticLife product typically provides up to $5,000 to repair or replace items like fishing equipment, water skis, and safety gear if they are lost or damaged while on board your watercraft.
