Spring Into Action

What you can do outside the house:

  • Clear eaves troughs and down spouts to allow proper drainage.
  • Make sure any disconnected down spouts are draining properly, away from your foundation.
  • Clear snow from the roof to prevent ice damming.
  • Clear snow from the foundation of the house.
Summer
  • Ensure the grading around your home slopes away from your foundation to help drain water away from your home (without negatively affecting neighbouring properties).
  • Make sure any disconnected down spouts are draining properly, away from your foundation.

What you can do Inside the house:

Inside The House Now
  • Seal any cracks or openings in walls, floors, windows and foundation.
  • Ensure that your plumbing is in good working condition. (Homeowners are responsible for any service lines from the property line to inside the home. The City is responsible for the public portion of the service line.)
  • Ensure the proper maintenance of sump pumps. Some need power to operate, so consider installing a back-up power source.
  • Avoid keeping valuables or important documents in the basement. If you do, keep them in a watertight container.
Summer
  • Hire a qualified plumber to install a backwater valve and a properly-sized sump pump and piping.
