The new school season is fast approaching, and with it comes kids of all ages flooding our streets, sidewalks, and play grounds.
During the school year, a child’s attention is being pulled in all different directions. With homework, friends, recess, and field trips occupying their thoughts, being aware of traffic when crossing the street may not be top of mind for a lot of kids, especially the younger ones. That’s where you come in.
As someone who is responsible enough to operate a vehicle, it’s important to remember that school zones deserve extra attention and special rules.
Starting September 1st, 2019, those rules are changing.
Old Rules: • 40 km/hr • 8:00 am – 10:00pm • 7 days/week • U-turns permitted at uncontrolled intersections
New Rules: • 30 km/hr • 7:00am – 7:00pm • 7 days/week • U-turns prohibited in school zone
The safety of our city’s little ones should be your number one priority when driving through school or playground zones.
We all know life can be crazy, fast, and chaotic, but our children’s safety is worth so much more than running late. If this isn’t enough to motivate you to slow down in school zones, tickets for speeding in school zones start at $170 and could result in 3 demerit points on your driver’s licence (losing 3 points on your licence will also result in at least a $150 financial penalty from SGI).
From all of us at Harvard Western Insurance—please drive safely and ensure all children have a great school year.
