Community Involvement

At Harvard Western Insurance, we are driven by the fundamental concept of caring. We help our clients to manage their risk because we care about them and the things that matter most. We also care about our community, and we show how much we care through regular volunteering, fundraising, and education efforts.

Volunteering

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity Canada brings communities together to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership. With the help of volunteers and Habitat homeowners, local Habitats in every province and territory help build and rehabilitate safe, decent and affordable homes, including single-family and multi-unit houses. The Habitat model of affordable homeownership bridges a gap for low-income working families by providing them with the opportunity to purchase their own Habitat home and build a better life. Harvard Western Insurance employees love to trade in their desks for a hard hat and a hammer and help make a difference in our community.

United Way Summer Success

Did you know that over the summer, most children digress in their reading levels? For many children, summer learning loss, also called summer slide, is the main reason they fall behind and are not able to reach their expected reading levels on time. Research tells us that children who do not reach their grade level reading by grade three are four times more likely to drop out of high school. This is why the United Way Regina, along with Regina Catholic Schools and Regina Public Schools launched ten Summer Success camps. These camps deliver a two-week program focused on targeted literacy strategies to help students maintain or improve their reading levels over the summer months. Summer Success camps allowed students to engage in supportive learning, while providing nutritious meals and snacks, exciting mini-excursions, books to take home and a backpack full of school supplies to start school in the fall.

Check out this video of our experience participating in the Summer Success initiative and learn why the United Way is so important with this interactive tool.

Timeraiser

Established in 2003, Timeraiser supports emerging Canadian artists and nonprofit organizations by connecting individuals who have time to spare with the organizations that need them. Timeraiser is a silent art auction where attendees bid volunteer time, not dollars, for original art. In addition to supporting emerging artists (each work of art is purchased at market price), Timeraiser wants to foster and celebrate volunteerism nationally and in local communities. Artists are paid for their work, nonprofits find skilled volunteers, and Canadians find meaningful volunteer opportunities. Harvard Western Insurance is proud to have sponsored Timeraiser each year it has operated in Regina, and has matched a number of staff with opportunities in our community, resulting in hundreds of volunteer hours given by the HWI team.

Fundraising

United Way Corporate Campaign

For more than 75 years, the United Way Regina has been working to make our city great for everyone. They invest in the most effective local programs to create opportunities and change, with the mission of improving lives and building community by engaging individuals and mobilizing collective action to improve the social and economic condition of all Regina citizens. HWI holds an annual United Way Corporate Campaign with the goal of raising funds to support the United Way Regina. We were thrilled to be able to contribute nearly $18,000 last year, and over $85,000 to date.

KidSport Corporate Challenge

KidSport is a children’s charity which assists children of families facing financial obstacles to participate in community sport programs so that all kids can play. The goal of KidSport is to provide these children with the opportunity to achieve physical, social, intellectual and moral development through participation in sport. If all children have the opportunity to play, learn self-respect, gain self-confidence, adopt active and healthy lifestyles, and realize dreams through sport, then these children may have a better chance of becoming contributing members and leaders in our communities. Each year, Harvard Western Insurance employees step up to join our KidSport Regina Fun & Fitness Corporate Challenge team, the Subrogators, and proudly raise money to support the KidSport initiative in our community.

Western Communities Foundation Support the Cause Walk

HWI is proud to support the Western Communities Foundation, the charitable arm of Western Financial Group, through the annual 5km Support the Cause fundraising walk. The Western Communities Foundation supports communities across Western Canada through community infrastructure grants and bursaries, and since its inception, has raised more than $2.7 million for the communities in which we live and work. HWI staff are proud to join in and have raised over $10,000 that has been invested into the Regina community through donations to Soul’s Harbour, Carmichael Outreach, KidSport, Dress for Success, and Hope’s Home.
